CLEMENTE AMEDEO MODIGLIANIAccursed artist par excellence, died of a dissolute life and marked by tuberculosis, Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was born in Livorno on July 12, 1884, is the fourth son of a Jewish family on the brink of a financial crisis. Eugenia Garsin, mom, I began to design and already in 1898, Modigliani attended the atelier of the painter Guglielmo Micheli, a student of the “Macchiaioli” Giovanni Fattori. At the end of 1900 he fell ill with tuberculosis and was forced to move to the south, between Naples and Rome. But it will be only the “naked schools” in Florence and Venice in 1902 and in 1903, the future “Modi,” as it was called by the French, was struck by the love for the female body.
Thanks to Uncle Garsin Amedeo, Amedeo Modigliani in 1906 found the money to move to Paris, home to the world of art. Rent a studio in Rue Caulaincourt, Montmartre, and the following year the surgeon knows Paul Alexandre, who becomes his collector. Modigliani enrolled at the Académie Colarossi, but it is in the taverns of the “Butte”, the most degraded of the district, that face those discussions about art can envisage the new avant-garde ’900. There he met Pablo Picasso, Andre Derain, Diego Rivera. But the painter Utrillo alcoholic and opium addict Pigeard Baron, who fatally open to drugs and alcohol.
The first exhibition of the painter Livorno took place in March 1908 Six works at the Salon des Independants, including “The Jew” and “Bust of a naked woman.” To get him to explain, he was the physician Paul Alexandre, who also had the insight to make him discover African art, leading him to visit museums Guimet, Louvre, and Trocadero. The meeting with primitivism is crucial and definitely opens the doors of sculpture and stone.
Due to a violent quarrel with other artists, Amedeo Modigliani Montmartre leaves, moving in so-called “beehive” de la “Ruche”, in Montparnasse. There he met Chagall, Leger and Soutine, above all, which always support the work. And again here that towards the end of 1909 Aunt Laura Garsin tracks him down, “miserably housed at the height of the first floor,” to bring it back to Livorno. Here, in summer, Modigliani worked at the famous opera “The Beggar,” which will be exhibited in 1910 at the Salon des Independants. In the same year, then, establishes a strong relationship with the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova.
In 1912 he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne X its stone heads. Fundamental, the meeting with the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, then already famous. At the same time, however, live in poverty, and a day of the same year his friend Ortis de Zarate finds him unconscious on the floor of the house, in critical physical condition. It organizes a collection to bring it back to Livorno, where he arrived skinny and pale. The Italian period lasts a few months. Amedeo Modigliani returned to Paris and within a couple of years he completed the study of the sculptural and pictorial called “caryatids” huge female figures of women who would have inscribed the artist’s work in the history of Livorno all times. It is also the period of the “long-necked ladies”, another hallmark of the artist.
Between 1914 and 1916 he attended Beatrice Hastings, according to some “damn muse” who encouraged him to drugs and alcohol. He works for the merchant Guillaume, the only one who bought the works of Modi in the period marked by the avant-garde cubist, to which the painter Livorno never had interest. And it is only at the beginning of 1917 that the Polish poet Leopold Zborowski began to deal with him. The proposed contract: CHF 15 per day in exchange for exclusive production.
It is the most important year in the life of Modi. Begins the series of nudes, portraits of the runs the famous Polish poet and his family and, above all, knows Jeanne Hebuterne, the woman who will not be able to survive it, committed suicide a few hours after his death. In December of the same year, the Berthe Weill Gallery organizes the first solo exhibition of Amedeo Modigliani’s nudes on display are picked up by the police, who considers them offensive.
In 1918, Jeanne is pregnant and together with Zborowski, move to the French Riviera. On November 29, was born in Nice little Jeanne Modigliani, his daughter. In this period he attended the house of the great Renoir, paralyzed, and a year later, returned to Paris and Jeanne pregnant again, Modigliani painted his only portrait. During the summer of 1919 the work of Livorno beginning to be appreciated abroad, in London, thanks to the efforts of critics Earp and Atkin. But these were the years in which tuberculosis is becoming more serious and the evening of 24 January 1920, the Hospital of Charity, Amedeo Modigliani dies. It seems that before he died he told his friend Zborowski these words: “I am fucked now, but I’ll let you Soutine.”
