On the shores of Lake Como, the environment in Como combines the beauty of the natural landscape to that of the works of man in a mixture which makes it one of the most elegant towns of Lombardy, a veritable open-air lounge.
The city center is located on the lakeside, just a few steps from Piazza del Duomo, one of the largest cathedrals in Lombardy. The historic core still has the look of the original Roman fort, with beautifully preserved medieval walls and large watchtowers (Porta Torre, Torre Gattoni, San Vitale). Noteworthy are the churches of S.Abbondio and S. Fedele, while true masterpieces are the buildings erected by the rationalist Giuseppe Terragni in Como: the former Casa del Fascio, the Monument to the Fallen, Asylum St. Elias and the Novocomum.
