The Natural Archaeological Park of the Rock Churches of Matera, simply called the Park of the Murgia Matera is located in the eastern part of the border with Basilicata and Apulia covers an area of ​​about 8000 hectares in the territory of Matera and Montescaglioso. It was established by the Regional Law 11 of 3 April 1990 with the aim of protecting the area of ​​the Murgia Matera, a particularly picturesque setting furrowed by ravines of Matera, Picciano and Bradano River. The area of ​​the park is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Sassi of Matera.
