The history of the shrine and the cult of the angel on the Gargano is reconstructed mainly on the basis of the Liber de Sancti apparitione Micaelis in Mount Gargano (an operetta hagiographic variously dated between the fifth and seventh centuries). It consists of three episodes, marked by the same number of appearances of the angel and said del Toro, respectively, of the Battle of the consecration of the basilica. In the first episode, one of the bull, is presented the initial impact between the angel and the mountains of Gargano. It is said that Gargano, a wealthy shepherd who is said to have given the name of the mountain, one evening, after returning to the fold of his large flock, he realizes that there is no bull. The besieged Siponto asked, a truce of three days. At the end of the period of the truce the Archangel appeared again and predicted victory over the Byzantines pagans. The incident results in legendary form a reality; history. Towards the middle of the seventh century it came to confrontation between the Byzantines and the Lombards: the first attacked the shrine Gargano, in defense of which saw Grimoald I, Duke of Benevento (647-671). After the victory over the Byzantines, the bishop was determined to consecrate the grotto, on this occasion the Archangel Michael appeared to announce that the cave had been consecrated by himself.
